I don't find denigration of gay characters for being gay. I listen to a lot less Cat Stevens after he seemed to voice support a fatwa against Salman Rushdie.Ĭard though, by my reading, seems to acknowledge the person-hood of homosexuals but also society's discomfort with it and homophobia was seen as unjust violence. There is always an issue separating an artist from their art. In the larger societies gays bashed, even unto death. As things progress his sacrifices are recognized by the just. In the second, the gay character has to be closeted from larger society, takes a wife who knows, and does father a child, for the sake of a small group. In the first he focuses on how the church finds it wrong, the great injustice and violence done to homosexuals and draws a distinction between relationships among peers and relationships between young boys and older men. However, I find he has focused on homosexuality at least twice, in his Song Master book (1978) and in his Home Coming series (1992). Many boycotted the Ender's Game film because of this. Can we talk about Orson Scott Card and cancel culture? OSC has been a long time favorite of mine, but for 15-20 years I got push back because he was "homophobic", and the evidence was he donated to an organization that did not support gay marriage.
